Lecture 5
Structure of matter; emission/absorption of light; Doppler effect
Thursday July 10, 2008
The pdf slides for this class are available on Angel.
Concepts:
- Light as a particle: Energy proportional to frequency; blue = more energy
- Atomic model: Protons and neutrons in nucleus, electrons farther out in discrete shells
- Emission: Electron falling down a level emits photon with energy equal to difference in levels
- Absorption: Electron can jump up a level by absorbing photon of correct energy
- Spectrum: Elements have unique pattern of emission/absorption lines
- Kirchoff laws: Hot/dense object emits blackbody radiation; low density gas in front shows absorption spectrum; low density gas excited/heated emits emission lines (see Figure 2.17 in textbook)
- Doppler effect: Object moving towards you is blueshifted, moving away from you is redshifted
Vocabulary:
- Ground state: Lowest energy level, where electrons prefer to be
- Molecule: Group of two or more bound atoms
