Penn State's High Energy
Astrophysics group is involved in a number of research efforts.
Dr. Gordon Garmire
is the Principal Investigator of the AXAF CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS)
experiment which will be launched aboard the Space
Shuttle Columbia in August of 1998. Dr. Garmire and Dr.
John Nousek led a team of scientists and engineers to calibrate the
ACIS camera. Following its launch, they will lead a team of scientists
in analyzing data from this instrument. To

Some of our graduate students are also involved in launching
x-ray cameras aboard sounding rockets. In fact, graduate students, scientists,
and engineers in our sounding rocket lab were led by Dr.
David Burrows and Dr. Gordon Garmire in
building the first photon-counting CCD camera ever flown. To
