SAC-B Solar Platform

Argentine thermal engineer Juan Bratina inspecting the SAC-B satellite just prior to its insertion into the thermal vacuum test chamber at INPE-LIT. This photo shows the solar platform of the satellite, which is the side that will be pointed at the Sun during flight. The cables attached to the solar platform carry data signals during the thermal vacuum test (see below). The white square object near the bottom of the solar platform with the verticle and horizon slits is the fine Sun sensor, which is used to keep the satellite's solar panels pointed at the Sun. This side of the satellite also contains the Argentine HXRS instrument and the US Goddard Space Flight Center's SOX instrument, which are both designed to study X-rays from solar flares with high time resolution.
