Ægishjálmur is one of the old Norse `magic' runes. 500 years ago being caught inscribing it would have lead to an early and painful death. It is in legend a potent symbol of personal protection and displaying it is moderately trendy in Iceland.
The runes are linked to the old pagan worship of
Ásatrú. The Icelandic
Ásatrú Association is probably the authoritative
