1. In your own words, describe three primary pieces of physical information we can get from an optical spectrum, with examples.
Why does demand for high resolution spectra drive a need for very large telescopes?
2. Go to AAS.org the website of the American Astronomical Society. Look up the current Job Register.
Categorize the different types of position and count how many jobs there are in different categories. How many are there.
A faculty position is typically for 35 years, a postdoctoral position is typically for 3 years. Predict what fraction of postdocs may become faculty. What is the fraction if each person takes two consecutive postdocs. Comment.
Do you see jobs which, judging from the description, you might think you would want to take? What is the job? Describe it to me in your own words.
