Homework and collaboration policy

The homework sets will be fairly short, require some calculation or discussion.

When you attempt the problems, do include all your working, including wrong attempts and general doodling. Partial credit will be awarded for effort, in general just writing down ``the answer'' will receive minimal credit.

You should attempt each problem by yourself. After the first attempt, you may discuss the problem with your classmates and other people. You may read over other people's attempted solutions (with the permission of the other people!), and work collaboratively on the problems - you may not copy directly other people's work, crib off the Web or copy from published books and articles. \smallskip The homework and paper should be your own work, every word of it.

Late homework or papers will be penalised unless you have a medical excuse or other official university related business. If you do, see me before the due date, if at all possible.

You are actively encouraged to ask questions during class, and to see me out of class. I am best contacted by e-mail if you have questions outside of office hours.

Paper:

The paper should be your own words, in their entirety. You will not transcribe or copy verbatim material from other published sources, unless you explicitly quote (`` '') the material and cite the source in text or footnote. Any plagiarism, copying or borrowing of text will be severly penalised.

You will use proper in-text citation, and append a full bibliography, using accepted quotation and citation styles. If you don't know what I mean by that, ask me, before I cover your paper with red ink.

You may discuss the content of your paper with anyone, but you must write it yourself. You may draw on books, published papers and preprints and web sites, as long as you yourself provide the phrasing, interpretation and structure of the material, and you cite all your sources.
