Partial Eclipse of the Moon
March 23, 1997
To behold the wandering Moon,
Riding near her highest noon,
Like one that has been led astray
Through the heav'n's wide pathless way.
-John Milton (1608-1674)

Also visit: Phases of the Moon - a page I wrote about the phases of the moon, Phases of the Moon for a much more "flashy" presentation of the phases of the moon and detailed descriptions for what causes them; and Moon Phases Calendar to find out what the moon will look like night-by-night.
Here is a really neat animation of the moon through an entire lunar cycle (from Astronomy Picture of the Day). More amazing animations of the moon, sun, planets, and more can be found at Antonio Cidadao's Homepage of Time-lapse Animations

These are pictures I took of the March 1997 partial Lunar Eclipse. They show the development of the eclipse from just after the moon entered the umbral shadow (the darkest part of the shadow), untill just past mid-eclipse. This eclipse was a ~90% partial, so the moon was never completely in shadow, only a small sliver remained at mid-eclipse.
