Two antique Bobbin laces
in Mary's collection are this Bedfordshire Maltese Doily
(top) and the Bruges Duchesse collar (bottom).
Both are examples of laces made at the end of the 19th
century at a few of the remaining handlacemaking centers
to offer competition to the ever growing machine lace
industry. Detailed views of the Doily and collar show the distinctive techniques used. A higher resolution version of the combined pieces is available here (173 kb).
