Examples of Lace Styles
Mary made these test swatches and sample laces
in order to study a range of bobbin lace techniques.
Reference books for these patterns and techniques
were: The Technique of Tønder Lace
by Inge Skovgaard, Further Steps in Honiton Lace
by Susanne Thompson, Pillow or Bobbin Lace
by E. Mincoff and M. Marriage, Bobbin Lacemaking
by Doris Southard, and A Manual of Bedfordshire Lace
by Pam Robinson. These are excellent home study resources.
These Tønder lace swatches demonstrate a Danish point
ground lace similar to the English Bucks Point.
The leaf and pinwheel motifs
are examples of the Honiton technique
in which motifs were assembled in piece fashion
on a mesh ground.
The hanky edging and bell-pull are made in the
relatively simple Torchon lace technique.
This Bedfordshire lace mat is another English
lace which has a guipure, or barred, rather than a mesh grounded
background.
