Antique Medallions

A matching pair of needlelace medallions consist of a man and a woman in Classical Roman attire.

These two antique 10 1/2" medallions are examples of the needlelace technique which is not successfully reproduced by machine. Mary wonders if the subject matter lends clues to the place or date of construction. Did the 19th century classical revival inspire these purely decorative laces? Any suggestions are welcomed.
