Happy Birthday, Judy!
29 August 2004
Just came back from spending the weekend in Silver Spring MD visiting Yari. Pretty good weekend. Friday night we (and by "we" I mean me and Yari and her roommates Shannon and Melanie) went clubbing in downtown DC, in particular to the MCCXXIII club. That night was awesome. We got horribly lost getting there! BTW, I was not the one driving, just in case... The maze of one-way streets and the many (way too many) roundabouts in the downtown DC area conspired against us, and it took us one hour do to a 20 minute trip. But we got there. We got into the nightclub for free because Yari had free passes. Yay to that. The music was kinda lame at first, but around midnight they started with the hip-hop and the ska and all the good stuff. Then sometime around 1am, OH-MY-GOD, they started playing reggaeton!!! Reggaeton, for those that don't know, is a Puertorrican music style that can be defined as somewhere between hip-hop and reggae, and it is very, very much fun to dance. The four of us started dancing like crazy. We were pretty much the only Puertorricans on the dancefloor, so we were the only ones dancing it correctly. There were also some very cute guys there. So yeah, all in all, pretty good night. Then Saturday we went to the Arundel Mills mall, off Rt 295 between DC and Baltimore. We saw "Collateral". I must say, that is one very stressful movie. I liked the movie all right, but not the end. The end could have been better. And well, today I got up, Yari made pancakes, and then I drove back to good old State College. And a huge thunderstorm spawned out of nowhere when I was five minutes away from my apartment, so I had to wait inside the car for about 15 minutes until the rain stopped. And now I'm back in my room, with my computer, checking email (ahh, email, I had not seen you since Friday)... And soon I'll be watching "The Simpsons"... Oh, and for those who want to know what happened to the "Grad Bios" page, so far the votes favor the format with the home page and links to subpages, so I think that's the one I'll keep...
26 August 2004
Well, today I've been entertaining myself with the "Grad Bios" page. Allow me to further explain: the "Grad Bios" page is a webpage where there are small biographical sketches of the grad students in the Penn State Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics. This page has been maintained by grad students since I-don't-know-when (it was already in existence when I arrived to the Department a year ago). Most recently, Michele Stark was managing it. However, she's a sixth year, working on her thesis and soon will be graduating, so she asked for volunteers to "inherit" the Bios page. I always enjoy some HTML coding, so I offered. I took the old bio page, copied the text, and came up with this new format. I've heard some good reviews. People seem to like the new page. Then, after I thought I was done, I got to thinking: "Hmmm... This page is really long!", and so, I decided to try out a different format, one in which there is a Home Page and then a separate page for first years, another one for second years, etc. Now, I am still trying to decide which one is the best choice, so if there's anyone out there who is reading this and wouldn't mind looking over both options, please do so and email me to let me know which one is, in your opinion, the best format. I'll also ask the other grad students for their opinions, and the format that gets the most votes will become the official new "Grad Bios" page. Then I'll try to get it linked from the Department page, so that it becomes even more official.

Feliz Cumpleaños, Luimary!
22 August 2004
Feliz Cumpleaños, Ángel!
20 August 2004
Finally! I put up the pictures from this summer. Go to the Photo Gallery and enjoy!
19 August 2004
Stuff I added: couple more pics in the "Family and Friends" page, and also, a new entry to the "Funny Stories" page, this one titled "Funnies: a blank sign, a nerdy plate"... Coming soon: pictures from the summer in Goddard.
18 August 2004: Later that day
Oh my god... Three days, three consecutive days no less, of wonderful, perfect weather. Sunny, not a cloud in the sky, almost no humidity, temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s. Wonderful, just plain wonderful. This is not usual State College PA weather, I must say. Gosh, I wish it would stay this way forever... Or at least for longer than just three days...
18 August 2004
Feliz Cumpleaños, Aida!
17 August 2004
Feliz Cumpleaños, Luzmary! And also, I've added some pictures: pics of some friends in the "Family and Friends" page, and pictures of my new apartment (yes, I finally finished moving and settling in)... Soon (maybe tomorrow or the next day) I'll add pictures from the Summer in Goddard, and a bit later on I'll finally write something about my summer research and my research here in Penn State (really, I'll do it soon enough)...
16 August 2004: Even later that day
Hehe, this has been a long day (I got up early this morning, hehe)... So yeah, I am incredibly homesick. The last time I was in Puerto Rico was in early January, and I won't be going back until mid-December. Having spent the summer in Goddard surrounded by fellow Puertorricans, I kinda got in touch with the little Boricua inside me. Oddly enough, I'm listening to music that I used to hate! Ok, I used to like reggaeton when I was in high school, but then I started to dislike it. Now I have a reggaeton CD blasting in my car stereo. And yes, I have downloaded a few salsa and merengue songs. Lo sé, es difícil de creer, pero es cierto... Olga Tañón, Elvis Crespo, Ivy Queen, Tego Calderón, Victor Manuelle, Gilberto Santa Rosa, heck even Rubén Blades, all of them are now in my mp3 repertoir. It's insane! I never thought such a thing would happen... I feel like dancing reggaeton, or merengue, or even salsa at any time. But I don't really know of anyone around here who would host a party and play such music. Nor do I know if there's any place around here in Middle-of-Nowhere, er, I mean, State College PA, where there could be latin music being played... *sniff* :'-( *sigh*...
16 August 2004: Later that day
Update: I just added my CV to the "Research Page", totally and completely up-to-date. There are two versions: a full version (with short descriptions of my research projects and a list of presentations I've made) in HTML and MS Word formats, and a short version (without descriptions or list of presentations) in PDF and PS formats...
16 August 2004
So, the Olympics, huh? Basketball, huh? Puerto Rico vs United States, huh? Oh yeah, all right, we won, we won! And by "we", I mean (of course) PUERTO RICO!!! Whoo-hoo!!! Puerto Rico defeats U.S. basketball 92-73. Not only did the Boricua team whup the American team's ass, but they did it by 19 points. A 19 point win, baby! All riiight!!! Boricua in da house! Hell yeah. Viva Puerto Rico...
14 August 2004: Later that day
I rock! Whoo-hoo! Allow me to explain: I bought a new bookshelf thingie, 'cause either my other bookshelf shrunk or my books got fatter but they don't all fit anymore in the other bookshelf. But I digress. I bought a new bookshelf, and after a very hard struggle to get the oh-so-heavy box into my car and then up the stairs, I wondered "Hmmm... how am I gonna put this together?". I thought that maybe my roommates would help, but darn, they're not here (they both left for the weekend). Maybe Bossi can help... but darn, he went home for the week. Maybe Matt? Nah, he's still moving, so he has a bunch of stuff to deal with... So, what to do? I can't get Daddy to help me, 'cause Daddy is 1700 miles away in Puerto Rico... Hmmm... What am I going to do? Maybe I can do it myself? Just maybe... I've never assembled any item of furniture by myself. I always get help from someone... But now there's no one around to help. So I went downstairs, got a hammer and a screwdriver, and decided that I, alone, by myself, will be able to assemble this thing... A couple of hours later, I was done! I did it! I did it! I put it together, by myself! Without any help from anyone! Whoo-hoo! *sniff* I'm so proud of me right now...
14 August 2004
Feliz Cumpleaños, Julián!
12 August 2004
Finally, moved out... Now, to unpack... Argh, I hate unpacking...
10 August 2004
Yes! Outback Jack chose Natalie! But more importantly, he did not choose Marissa. Gah, I hated that girl, she was so fake... Yes, I watched "Outback Jack", it's one of my guilty pleasures...
9 August 2004
Moved a whole bunch of stuff today, but I still need to move a whole bunch of other stuff (books, clothes, etc)... And a bit about the website: I added some more random pictures in the "Contact Info" page. I particularly loooove the drawing of me in Anime form, courtesy of June Zhang. I've also added some links... Can't really remember all the links I've added, but I do remember two of them: one page with the song of a coquí, and another page with a picture of Playa Ventana, a gorgeous beach with an impressive geological structure that just so happens to be located in my hometown of Guayanilla, Puerto Rico... Isn't that spiffy?
8 August 2004
I'm back in State College. Had some trouble with the internet (Adelphia sucks sometimes, and so does Sprint)... Will start moving tomorrow... Now, feeling a bit melancholic... Already miss my Goddard buddies, in particular Vanessa and Julián... I also miss June... I got to State College and there was no weird girl in the apartment to tell me of how I'm violating the sanctity of white rice by adding salt to it... And Beau, miss you too. Super congrats on the presentation award, and I hope that you get to the last level of Ninja Gaiden and beat the crap out of the bad guys and win the game... Tommy: stay happy. It's amazing that you can be so happy all the time. Don't ever change... Aaand I'm getting misty-eyed, so I'm gonna stop now...
7 August 2004
Feliz Cumpleaños, Zuleima!
5 August 2004
So tomorrow is my last day in Goddard, and then I go back home... Ahh, to sleep in my own bed again... I'm gonna miss the friends I've made here so much... I'm gonna miss my officemates; they're really nice. I'm gonna miss my friend Vanessa the most. Hehe, we are so much alike, it's like we're long-lost sisters or something... I'm also gonna miss Julián. He's annoying sometimes, but he's a good friend.... And yes, I'll even miss June, and all her wackiness and the rice with no salt and the impossibility to roll her r's... And Beau, Luis, Shani, Keila, Tommy, etc etc etc...
4 August 2004
So I did my presentation yesterday. I think it went pretty good. My advisors liked it, and the guy who's in charge of the co-op positions in the Space Sciences Directorate in Goddard also liked it, so I guess I'm good, huh? And so, I have updated my CV by adding this presentation... And I guess that's it for now with the updates... More updates to come soon...
1 August 2004
Happy Birthday, Tommy! And also, I got a haircut, and of course, took pictures of it and put them in the "Contact Info" Page... And also, Justin left for Florida this weekend. *sniff* I'm gonna miss you, dude! Enjoy the warm weather... And now back to working on my presentation/paper, cause I'm two days away from my deadlines...
30 July 2004
Well, after hundreds of lines of Matlab coding, testing, checking, re-checking, comparing, re-testing, re-comparing, and checking some more, I have finally proved that my code is A-OK. It works fine. It's good... I integrated the Press-Schechter function in log of mass, and compared with the plot that appears on the paper where I got most of my equations, and they match oh-so-perfectly. Therefore, my code works. But my results are different from the paper we're trying to reproduce. So, either they did something wrong, or they did something that they did not document and so I could not follow them exactly. But at least now I know for sure that there's nothing wrong with my code. That makes me happy... And now it is time to prepare for my presentation, which is in about four days...
28 July 2004: Later that day
I have just added two more random pictures of me to my "Contact Info" page... Oh, and about that whole Press-Schechter deal... Well, it seems very likely, as of right now, that *I am right* and that my code is *not wrong*... Still looking into it, but seems very, very plausible right now. Yay, I rock...
28 July 2004
Well, remember how I said that the Press-Schechter function was finally working? Well... yeah, I might have celebrated a bit too early... It's fine, but it's still a liiiitle teeny tiny bit off from the results we are trying to reproduce. But I am *so* sure that I have nothing wrong in my code... Argh... Well, right now I'm trying to integrate the P-S function to compare with another paper, and if -no wait, not if-, WHEN I get that integration to exactly match that other paper, then I'll be certain that I'm right, and the paper we're trying to reproduce might be wrong. So people, wish me luck, 'cause my presentation and paper are due next Tuesday, and I'd like to at least be able to present some good preliminary results...
26 July 2004
Awesome day in DC yesterday with my friend Lisa and her boyfriend Scott. But boy, oh boy, did we walk a lot. My legs hurt like crazy... Did you know that DC is infested with statues of pandas? They are everywhere. I wish I had known about this sooner, then I would have made it my goal to search and take pictures of every single one of them (they are 150 in total according to the Washington Post and the interactive map they have there)... But now it's too late, and I have a presentation and a paper to work on, not to mention integrating the Press-Schechter function to continue doing the calculations for the merger rates, and then I go back home to State College, PA and move to my new apartment... So yeah, no time to hunt for panda statues anymore... But hey, at least yesterday I found 14 of them (wow, not even 1/10 of the total)... And yeah, a little website update: I added a link. A very funny link. So funny, in fact, that I'll link to it from here also. It's a website called JibJab, where they have a very, very funny Flash musical thingie with Bush and Kerry. You gotta see it. It's funny... And I also added another funny link to a very fun game where you have to keep a drunk guy walking for as long as you can before he falls over and goes to sleep (but it's in German -I think- and so I have no idea what they're saying, but the game is pretty much self-explanatory)...
24 July 2004
Feliz Cumpleaños, Ailec! Oh, and also a bit of an update to the site. It's not even noticeable, but it's big and it was very hard to do all by hand (Gah, I need to learn Cascading Style Sheets, it sounds like it would make my life so much easier than what it is right now with straigh-up HTML hand coding)... The update is just that now all my website files are in folders. Yes, folders. One folder per each major category (the big links buttons on the left). So now it's easier for me to navigate through all my files. Isn't that nice? Yes it is indeed. I really hope I re-linked everything correctly, but if anyone finds any broken links, then let me know, ok?
22 July 2004
The Press-Schechter function works!!! Finally! Whoo-hoo!!! And in the world of website updates, I have added a "Site Map" link in the Home Page, with the purpose of illustrating the structure of the website and helping navigation through its many pages...
21 July 2004
Done with the website makeover! My CV is now updated and in the same format as the rest of the site... The next steps will be to (A) Add my CV in different formats (PDF, PS, DOC); (B) Write descriptive summaries for my research in Penn State and Goddard; (C) Add pictures from this summer and from State College... The way things are going now, Objective A will probably happen within a week or so, Objective B maybe within 2-4 weeks, and Objective C in about 5 weeks... But hey, things might also happen sooner... or later, whenever...
20 July 2004
One new car picture... Website makeover almost done (still updating CV)... Press-Schechter function still off by a few orders of magnitude...
19 July 2004
Some progress has been made in the website makeover. The only pages that still have the old format are the ones within the Picture Gallery, and also my CV page. The CV itself has to be updated, so when I do that I'll also update its format. I also added to my Research Page the titles of my current research in Goddard and Penn State, and soon enough they will become links to pages that will have information about those projects... And speaking of research, it seems I've also made some progress with the Press-Schechter function. The shapes of the curves now look OK, but the numbers are still off by a few orders of magnitude. Hopefully I'll get this done soon so that I can start calculating some merger rates...
18 July 2004
So yesterday we went to Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. Cedar Point was unfreakinbelievably awesome! Well, except for the fact that it rained cats and dogs the whole time... I did an approximately five hour drive from State College, PA at five in the morning, and it was mostly foggy along I-80, which was kinda scary. Then as soon as I cross the PA/OH border, it starts raining like crazy. The rain got worse on the Ohio Turnpike. Matt called at like 7:30am and asked how I was doing with the drive, and I said that it was raining, and he proceeded to inform me that in Sandusky it was bright and sunny, so I expected it to stay that way. It seems like the rain followed me all the way to Sandusky, because as soon as we went through the main gates, it started raining like crazy. We all got ponchos and were walking around looking like Smurfs (they were blue). At least we were able to get on most of the rides (even though we got soaked on every ride we did, and none of them were supposed to be water rides, hahaha)... Millenium Force was awesome! It is THE best rollercoaster I have EVER riden. Just amazing. Wow. Can't get over how good it was. We couldn't ride the Dragster (the 120mph, 420ft one, tallest/fastest in the world) because at first it was broken, then when they fixed it the train could not reach all the way up, then when it did go all the way up the line was about 3 hours long and we wanted to ride other things too, and then when we did have time to make the long line, it was raining horribly again and they closed it down. But regardless, the Millenium Force alone was worth the long drive. It was awesome. So very cool... Oh, and Ángel saw Amish people on our drive there, so he was happy...
17 July 2004
Feliz Cumpleaños, Elisa!
16 July 2004
Update progress: slow. I have now updated the look and feel of all the pages contained within the "Personal" page, and also the "Teaching" page. And, yeah, obviously, the "Home" page too. But everything else is still in the old format. But not to worry: soon enough they too will be updated... Or maybe not so soon enough... Depends on how much free time I have... Well, ok, back to work on the Press-Schechter function (btw, sigma square now looks OK, but I still have something wrong with the P-S that I haven't figured out yet)...
15 July 2004
Still working on Press-Schechter... Also, still working on the website makeover... Also, and most importantly, I have added a new "article" to my "Funny Stories" page (you can find it through my "Personal Page" if you don't know where it is). This one is a "New Theory About Men" that me and Vanessa came up with this morning. It is very entertaining, and has gotten very good reviews already from people such as Ángel, Angélica and Justin... Also, I decided to get rid of my "Astro Pics" page because all the pictures in there took up too much disk space... I still have copies of all those pics (in my computer, of course), and you can find them all over the Internet, especially APOD (Astronomy Picture of the Day), so yeah... But I had to get rid of the page...
14 July 2004
For those that may care, I'm still trying to calculate the Press-Schechter function. I now get a smooth sigma square, but the scales of the P-S distributions are still waaaay off... Sooo, trying to keep myself sane by not obsessing over the stupid function (I know, too late, but meh, whatever), I decided to give my website a little bit of a makeover. Starting with the main page today and working my way to every nook and cranny in the site during the week. The background is now black behind the text, so that it's more readable and easier on the eyes. I still kept the Hubble Deep Field, but now it's only the background for the pseudo navigation bar I have on the left, and for the title bar on top. Also, for those that bother to look at the HTML source code, you'll notice that it too is easier on the eyes and more readable... But now it's 6pm and I'm tired from working all day on the Press-Schechter function (and also from HTML coding during the last half hour, but that one is not nearly as tiring as the Matlab coding I'm doing for the P-S function), sooo, I'm gonna go home... I guess I will continue the website makeover tomorrow (or whenever I have time)...
13 July 2004
Happy Birthday, Beau!
12 July 2004
Whoo-hoo, Six Flags! We went there on Saturday (two days ago), and it just plain rocked! The Superman ride: AWESOME. I *heart* rollercoasters...
9 July 2004
Yay, clubbing! DC nightclubs rock! Oh, also, an update to the website: I re-organized some links (in particular, the General Interest links and the Useful Research Links)... In other news, if anyone out there knows how to compute the Press-Schechter function or how to calculate the mass variance integral, please help me, 'cause I'm drowning in equations and Matlab codes that don't work... I just know that I'm missing some itty bitty, stupidly simple, magic little detail, but until I find it, I won't be able to make it work (John W., if you happen to be reading this, I haven't got it to work yet even though I followed what you told me step by step)... I think it's an error with the way I'm using the Matlab "quad" numerical integration routine, but I'm not entirely sure...
6 July 2004
Talk about nerdy licence plates... So yeah, I'm the first one (OBAFGKM, hehehe), but here in Goddard I've seen three, count them: THREE, very nerdy licence plates, and they are: PLANETS, ASTRO1, and, the best one of all, PHY6 (haha, get it? "physics", hehe hehe *snort* hehe). So yeah, this proves that I'm not the only nerd driving around in a car with a nerdy licence plate...
5 July 2004
Happy Aphelion! (Earth's farthest point from the Sun during this year)... Yes, I'm a nerd, only a true astronomy geek would know this :-P
3 July 2004
More car pictures! Yay OBAFGKM! Whoo-hoo!!!
29 June 2004
New addition to my "Funny Stories" page: a very funny reaction, by Andy Bossi, to my "I hate I-95" rant. He explains how I-95 is the place where space-time breaks down, and how it is faster to walk than to drive on that stupid interstate. Very funny stuff indeed...
28 June 2004
I hate I-95. Me and four other people (Julián, Ángel, Ángel V. and Claribel) went to Busch Gardens (Williamsburg) on Saturday, and to get there we had to drive on I-95. That interstate is horrible! It had horrible, horrible traffic. And when I say "horrible" I mean "almost completely stopped". It took us FIVE HOURS to get from College Park, MD to Williamsburg, VA. It shoulda been three hours, but because of the horrible traffic on I-95, it took us five hours. And try to imagine having five people in a Honda Civic for five hours. Not comfortable, right? Now add to that the fact that two of those five people are over six feet in height. Even worse, right? So, damn you, vile I-95 and your wretched traffic jams! On the bright side, Busch Gardens was awesome, in particular an inverted coaster called "Alpengeist" which just plain rocked. We rode it three times, two of which in the front row. Hell yeah. Yay rollercoasters!
26 June 2004
Feliz Cumpleaños, Miguel!
23 June 2004
Feliz Cumpleaños, Robert Santiago!
21 June 2004
Happy Summer Solstice! Also, I just added some car pictures and some pictures from Puerto Rico that Ángel sent me (from his Spring Break in Culebra)...
18 June 2004
Happy Birthday to me!!! Feliz Cumpleaños a mi!!! Twenty-three, all-riiight!!! :-)
14 June 2004
Well, today's Monday. Two days ago, on Saturday, I headed out to Washington, DC with 7 more people with the intention of finally finding the Albert Einstein Memorial. Why? Because some three years ago, when I was an intern in NIST, some people went to see it on a day that was awfully inconvenient for me (the day before my presentation), and said nothing of the statue's whereabouts. Ever since then I have been wanting to see the statue, but since I had no idea where it was, I could never find it. Summers went by and still no statue for Emily. But last week I decided to ask Google, the mother of all wisdom, where is that statue located, and I found it! On the grounds of the National Academy of Sciences (makes sense, doesn't it?), on Constitution and 23rd, near the Foggy Bottom metro station. Sooooo, this Saturday I set out to find it. People went with me, and some of them were very skeptical about the statue's existence. But we found it! Ha-ha! In your face, boys that thought the Einstein statue did not exist! And so, I was giddy as a two-year-old, and I was taking lots and lots of pictures. The pictures will be here soon, as soon as I make a page for this summer... In other news, I'm 4 days away from turning 23 and I feel old, haha. Maybe it's because most of the interns here are undergrads and the oldest are only 20 or at most 21. Ahh, I remember being 20... Good old times... Oh well, life goes on, you stop being underage, and you eventually turn 23. Hey, at least I'm still seven years away from being 30 :-P hahahaha...
12 June 2004
Happy Birthday, Mia!
9 June 2004
I have a niece! Well, not exactly "niece" in the sense that well, I have no siblings, so I cannot technically be an "aunt". BUT, my cousin Luimary (my Dad's niece) just had a baby girl, Luimary Yamil (also known as "Luimaricita"). And so, since I cannot be an aunt, I claim that my cousin's baby is my niece, and as such, I am her aunt. So there. Anyone got a problem with that? No? Good, let's keep it that way... Hehe :-)
5 June 2004
Ok, 50 degrees (F) for a high temperature is NOT supposed to be June weather. Too cold... True, this is State College, PA, but still... Oh, yeah, back in State College for the weekend. Picking up contacts, hanging out, watching movies and playing video games with Matt. Fun stuff. Going back to the DC area tomorrow. Yay warm. But, uh, cicadas... No fun... Oh well, they'll die off soon enough... Oh, and also I'd like to congratulate a bunch of my friends from UPRM-Physics who are graduating tomorrow: Ángel, Angélica, Miguel, Yari, Font, Teddy, Evelyn... Richard(?), Ahira(?), Maran(?), Jonathan(?) -question marks because I'm not sure if they're graduating now or maybe next semester- and anyone else who may have slipped my mind... Felicidades!
3 June 2004
Quick little update. The computer network in Davey (i.e., in the Astro department, for those that don't know what I'm talking about when I say "Davey") has been down/dead/not working for the past week or so. Hence, I have not had email. Nor have I been able to update the website. Nor have I been able to put my neutron stars in orbit around black holes... But now the network is slowly coming back online. Still have no email, but I can update the website... Anyway, I'm in Goddard, got here a few days ago. I'm working with Joan Centrella and John Baker calculating merger rates of massive black holes from hierarchical mergers of halos, which could be detected as low frequency gravitational radiation by LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna). It's really cool. Been reading papers, learning Matlab, gonna do some actual work soon enough. This weekend I'm going back to State College because I'm hopefully picking up my new glasses and contacts (yay!!!), and also picking up BOB (Big Orange Book, a.k.a. Carroll & Ostlie's "Introduction to Modern Astrophysics") because there are many things in the papers I'm reading that I don't quite understand, and so I need to have my handy Astro Bible as reference... Oh! Also, cicadas: they are EVERYWHERE here in the DC area. Big, ugly, disgusting bugs that don't have much brains, since they seem to keep slamming into my car's windshield and office window... Hmmm, what else? Don't know... Ok, I should get back to work... The next update will probably not be me blabbing on about what's going on in my boring life and might actually have something interesting...
