As noted in the publication policy, all SDSS papers should reference the appropriate technical publications. This sentence is interpreted fairly strictly, so if you don't reference all of the appropriate technical papers you can expect a reminder from your friendly local Scientific Publications Coordinator.
The CoCo has agreed that only technical papers that have been written and submitted are required to be referenced. You are of course welcome and encouraged to reference the appropriate "in preparation" technical papers, but they will not be listed here. At the end of this list are conference papers that can substitute as technical references for journal articles that have not yet been submitted, but citing these references is not required; they are provided here for the convenience of authors. If you believe any papers have been omitted from this list, please contact the Scientific and Technical Publications Coordinators (Donald Schneider is currently serving in both positions). Authors of technical papers should read the ARC policy for page charges of SDSS technical papers.
The list of technical papers will continue to grow in the near future, so you should always consult this page before posting an SDSS manuscript to the publication index. Please let the SPC know if you notice missing technical references. An extended list of technical references, including papers that are planned but not yet submitted and a longer list of conference proceedings that are not official technical papers or required references but do provide documentation of some aspects of the survey, is available here .

In addition to the technical papers listed above, you should also reference all appropriate data release papers. If your paper uses data from DR5, for example, it should cite the DR5 paper, but it need not cite the earlier data release papers unless they contain information not in the DR5 paper that is germane to your analysis.
