Telescope Observing

A teaching assistant will be available on the roof of Davey Lab (the 6th floor) every Monday through Thursday evening, starting Tue 1/22, from 8:30pm to 10:00pm to assist students in the use of a telescope to observe astronomical objects. Each student is required to attend one evening of telescope observing and complete two activities based on their observations. These activities are to be handed in to the teaching assistant BEFORE leaving the telescope.

In the case of inclement weather, there will be an alternate planetarium project available to students. The planetarium is located at 541A Davey Lab (one floor down from the telescopes). Due to limited seating, the planetarium will be available on a first come, first served basis, and will start promptly. At most two planetarium shows will be given on a given night (and the second one, only when required). Those who arrive late to the first show will be able to wait until the second show. Late arrivals to the second show will not be admitted. The planetarium show will last approximately 30-45 minutes. PLEASE BRING WITH YOU THE PLANISPHERE WHICH WAS INCLUDED WITH YOUR TEXTBOOK.

You can check on the status of the telescope by going to the following webpage:
http://www.astro.psu.edu/telescopes/status.html

Students are encouraged to complete the projects as soon as possible. In an effort to minimize the number of students who wait until the end of the semester, after Feb 14 students will only be allowed to attend during a restricted period of time determined by your last name (before this, students are free to attend on any scheduled day). The last day to complete the project is determined by the first letter of your last name. ALL projects must be completed by April 17th. Neither the telescopes nor the planetarium will be open during Spring Break (March 10 - 14).

The project dates have been broken down according to last name as follows:

Anyone: Jan 22 - Feb 14
A - E: Feb 18 - Feb 28
F - L: Mar 3 - Mar 20
M - R: Mar 24 - Apr 3
S - Z Apr 7 - Apr 17
