Astro 11
Lab 14
- In this lab, you will observe that all galaxies are moving away from us,
using the Doppler shift formula to calculate their velocities. You will
understand that this observed motion of all galaxies is a result of the
expansion of the universe. From this, you will calculate the age of the
universe.
- This is a computer lab, so make sure you show up to the correct
classroom.
- You will need your calculator for this lab. If you are still not
bringing a calculator to class, what's wrong with you?
- Make sure to read all of the instructions for the computer program on
page 114.
- You will not need to record all the data created by the computer program.
Read through the data chart on page 120 to find out which data you should
be keeping track of.
- When calculating the recession speeds of the galaxies you observed,
pay close attention to the formula on page 115. Notice that the formula has
v/c on the right side. You want to solve for v, alone.
- For the summary, you should know what to do, by now. Go get 'em,
tiger!
